The mission of Shehu Shagari University of Education is “to produce professionally sound and morally upright teaching manpower to meet the demand and aspiration of sokoto state and nation”

Key Moments in History.

1970

Founded with a Vision

The institution was established in 1970 as Shehu Shagari College of Education. it was created by the Sokoto State Government to train qualified teachers for primary and secondary schools. The college became one of the major teacher-training institutions in northern Nigeria.

Early Academic Development

The college offered programmes leading to the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). It later introduced degree programmes through affiliations with Ahmadu Bello University and Usmanu Danfodiyo University.These programmes helped expand teacher education and academic training.

2020

Upgrade to a University

In 2020, the Sokoto State Government approved the plan to upgrade the college to a university. The upgrade was aimed at expanding academic programmes and improving higher education in the state.

2022

Official Approval

In March 2022, the National Universities Commission (NUC) officially approved the upgrade. The institution was renamed Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto.
It became one of the newest state universities in Nigeria.

Naming of the University

The university is named after Shehu Shagari, the former President of Nigeria (1979–1983). He was a respected leader from Sokoto, and the naming honors his contributions to education and national development..
