Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto, was established in February 2022 with the sole objective of producing qualified graduates who have respect for the dignity of labour and human existence. As such, the management of the university established the Centre for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Studies (CDRM&HS) the same year. The centre is headed by a first Pioneer Director, Dr Hussaini Attahiru with many years of teaching experience. In addition, the center has qualified, experienced, competent, and trained staff in various disciplines who are ready to deliver up to expectations on any project within the center's mandate. The center also has well furnished office, laboratory and gadgets to aids in research works and its implementation to knowledge driving on the vulnerable persons in the community.  The prevailing situation in Nigeria regarding insurgency and banditry, which led to the displacement of large populations across the country, calls for the university system to play a role in contributing to addressing the phenomenon. The overall objective for establishment of the CDRM&HS is to promote research works for better understanding of the flight of Disaster management and Humanitarian crisis, support development of frameworks for effective management of these groups of people, to ensure the protection and promotion of their rights as human beings in the society. Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto, has the corporate social responsibility to serve the immediate community where it is located, serve the country, and establish global networks with relevant organizations in pursuit of its mandate through the CDRM&HS. Clientele: The targets of concern at the CDRM&HS are IDPs like women, children, and youth. Others are migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, disabled people, and Out of school children, Almajiris, stateless persons, and people who have fled their homes as a result of emergencies such as flooding and fire incidents, violence, and conflict.

Mission

The mission of the Centre is to provide sustainable leverage for interdisciplinary research and implement the research findings practically to drive knowledge for IDPs, refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, victims of disaster infernoes, and global studies in the area of managing disasters and humanitarian crises.
